Puzzle pieces have 3 attributes. Rarity, Type and Depth.

Risky type pieces can be found only in Risky missions.
Deadly type pieces can be found only in Deadly missions.
Pieces with number 1 to 5 can only be found in depth 1 of the dig, (a dig with level 1 to 25 has a depth of 1)
